Dr Wilmot James attended and matriculated from Athlone High School in the Western Cape.

He then graduated from the University of the Western Cape with a B.A. Honours (cum laude), before further achieving a M.Sc. and Ph.D. from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, U.S.A.

Dr James spent most of his early professional life serving in the higher education sector in South Africa, the U.S.A. and the U.K. Throughout his early career Dr James was involved in public policy work specialising in immigration and electoral reform.
After spending 12 years as a Trustee of the New York based Ford Foundation, Dr James entered public life during 2008 and was elected to Parliament on 22 April 2009. His constituency is Mitchells Plain.

Dr James lives in the Southern Suburbs of Cape Town and is actively involved in school biology education and particularly enjoys working with teachers.
Education is his passion, and Dr James cares deeply about empowering this country's young people so that they can have hope and a prosperous future in South Africa.
Dr James is married to Delysia Forbes, and they have two daughters Gabriele (17) and Isabella (7).

He maintains his health by climbing Table Mountain weekly and his mood by listening to opera and classical music.

Dr Wilmot James serves the DA as Shadow Minister of Trade and Industry. His areas of policy interests are education, immigration and science & technology.
