法新社报道，美国国务卿克林顿间接向北京发出警告，表示北京不要向日本对争议岛屿的现有控制权提出挑战的言论引起中国的强烈不满。中国外交部发言人秦刚在外交部网页发表的一份声明中称，对美国国务卿的说辞“中国表示强烈不满和坚决地反对”。声明还表示：“我们敦促美方以负责任的态度对待钓鱼岛（日本称尖阁诸岛，编者注）及其附属岛屿的问题。”

本周五，克林顿在和日本外相岸田文雄在华盛顿共同会见记者时表示：“我们反对任何寻求破坏日本行政管辖的单边行动。”克林顿没有提到直接提到北京，不过她说希望中国和日本以和平的方式解决主权之纷。她表示：“我们不希望看到任何一方做出可能引发紧张局势升级的行动，也不希望任何一方因为对形势估计错误而走出破坏地区和平、安全和发展的一步。”
