Music

Young Turks

Encountering Turkey, this Deutsche Welle Festival Concert features the Bilkent Youth Symphony Orchestra from Ankara, guests of the Beethovenfest Bonn and Deutsche Welle.

In the Orchestra Campus, co-sponsored yearly by DW and the Beethovenfest, young musicians from overseas give their take on the composer in performances in Bonn and Berlin. Founded 20 years ago, the 110-member orchestra from Ankara represents youth orchestras from across Turkey, symbolizing the cosmopolitan, Western-oriented side of that society that is complex and highly polarized. Joining the young Turks in Beethoven's Violin concerto is Tobias Feldmann, a 23-year-old prize winning German violinist.

The program also includes the world premiere of a work commissioned by DW. The very first performance of "Tableaux Vivants d'une Résistance" (Living Images of a Resistance) far exceeded expectations and turned out to be a triumph for composer Tolga Yayalar, a music professor at the Bilkent University in Ankara, Turkey's first private university. The work was conceived with impressions of the Gezi Park protests in June 2013 still fresh in the composer's mind. The civil unrest grew into the largest protest movement in the country's history, some 5,000 demonstrations with over 3.5 million people participating. Yayalar's response was to capture the atmosphere of hope and chaos, and to abstract it into an emotionally gripping piece that melds Western twelve-tone compositional technique and jazz with microtonality.
