Its resemblance to a tiny horse gives the marine creature its name in both English (seahorse) and German (Seepferdchen).

But German children have an additional reason to love Seepferdchen, beyond the cuteness factor. The term is also used across the country for a standardized beginners' swimming examination. Kids who pass are officially designated as able to swim - and receive a badge in the shape of a seahorse. It may not be a gold medal, but at least it means they can keep themselves afloat in an upright position - just like little seahorses.
