Williams beat Denmark's Wozniacki 6-3, 6-3 in a match that lasted just 75 minutes.

Sunday's victory marked the sixth US Open crown for the 32-year-old American, and the 18th grand slam title of her career. With 18 major singles titles, the fourth-most in history, has earned Williams a place in the record books alongside Martina Navratilova and Chris Evert.

Williams set another record on Sunday with her prize money, taking home $3 million (2.3 million euros) for the title in addition to a $1 million bonus for having the best results during the North American summer hard-court circuit.

A major title still eludes the 10th seeded Wozniacki, who was back in a grand slam final for the first time in five years. The match on Sunday set Williams' record over Wozniacki to 9-1.

On Monday, Japan's Kei Nishikori will face off with Croatia's Marin Cilic in the men's final, after upsets which saw them knock out favorites Novak Djokovic and Roger Federer, respectively.
