Most people wake up with some form of oral odor, and there’s nothing medically worrying about it. At night the salivary glands produce less saliva and the mouth can become dry. Certain bacteria proliferate under these conditions. It is their sulfur-containing waste products that are responsible for the bad smell. Scraping the tongue and brushing thoroughly at bedtime can help to reduce the severity and duration of morning breath.
