Providence Medical Center in Everett, Washington, released a statement late on Sunday local time saying Soriano had died as a result of her injuries, bringing total number of victims killed to two.

"Despite the tremendous efforts of our caregivers, unfortunately the trauma injuries were extensive," the statement read.

Soriano was a victim of a shooting at a high school in nearby Marysville, about an hour's drive north of Seattle. Jaylen Fryberg, a first-year student at Marysville Pilchuck High School, carried out the attack on Friday, killing one student before turning the gun on himself. Four other students, including Soriano, were critically injured in the attack.

Two of the injured students remain in critical condition after being shot in the head, while the third injured student is in serious condition with a gun-shot wound to the jaw. One of the critically injured victims – a 14-year-old girl – is also being treated at Providence, while the two other victims are being treated at Seattle's Harborview Medical Center. The two boys in Seattle are 15- and 14-year-old cousins of the shooter.

'Senseless tragedy'

The Providence hospital statement also included some remarks from Soriano's family.

"We are devastated by this senseless tragedy. Gia is our beautiful daughter and words cannot express how much we will miss her. We've made the decision to donate Gia's organs so that others may benefit. Our daughter was loving, kind and this gift honors her life," the statement said.

"We ask that you please respect our privacy and give us the space and time we need to grieve and spend time together as a family in memory of Gia."

The hospital has invited members of the community to take part in a moment of silence on Monday at 10:39 a.m. local time – the time the shooting began on Friday.
