At the border of Fortress Europe

Every day, hundreds of mostly Syrian and Afghan refugees travel through the Balkans in the hope of crossing into the EU. Many of them end up in the Serbian town of Subotica, near Hungary's southern frontier, waiting for their chance to cross into the borderless Schengen Area. Conditions are especially tough for these migrants during the winter months, with plummeting temperatures and snow.
