Vonn crashes to miss out on win number 62

December 21, 2014

Having claimed her 61st World Cup win in Saturday's downhill at Val d'Isere, US skier Lindsey Vonn missed out on the chance to equal the record on Sunday after crashing in the super-G.

Lindsey Vonn's quest for a record-equaling 62nd World Cup win has been put on hold after the four-time World Cup winner crashed out of Sunday's super-G. Elisabeth Görgl beat Olympic champion Anna Fenninger by .05 seconds for an Austrian one-two. Overall leader Tina Maze of Slovenia finished third.

Vonn entered a gate slightly too wide and fell on her elbow, but, despite staying on the ground for a moment or two, did no damage to her troublesome right knee. The girlfriend of Tiger Woods has only started racing again recently following two operations.

"I was on the limit and hit some softer snow and lost a little bit of elevation, and then I wasn't able to make the gate," said Vonn. "The most important thing is my knees are good."

Sunday's course had a fast top section and a number of sudden directional changes, making it a real challenge for the competitors.

"I was risking everything and attacking the course. That sometimes happens in super-G, you don't have any training runs and you have just one inspection," added the 30-year-old. "I hit my elbow, somehow funny. I have some ice on it. It's just a little bit swollen but no big deal."

A top-three finish would have been Vonn's fourth consecutive podium finish and things were headed that way after Vonn's first split left her .01 ahead of Georgl.

After Christmas, Vonn's next chance to equal Moser-Proell's winning record will come at Bad Kleinkirchheim in Austria on January 10 and 11. Maze currently leads the overall standings with 656 points, Fenninger is second with 407 while Vonn is in third with 312.
