Vietnam Airlines will start direct flights to Germany in June as part of a rapid route expansion strategy, an aviation official said Tuesday. The carrier will fly directly to Frankfurt on June 20, Vietnam Airlines spokesperson Nguyen Chan told AFP, without providing any further details. According to the daily Lao Dong newspaper, the national flag carrier will travel to Germany twice a week from Hanoi and once from the southern business capital Ho Chi Minh City. Vietnam Airlines is already operating a twice-weekly service from Ho Chi Minh City to Frankfurt with stopovers in Hanoi and Moscow. The new route will be Vietnam Airlines' second direct route to Europe after Paris. Last year the airline said it served 70,000 passengers travelling between Vietnam and Germany, an increase of up to 70 percent against previous years.
