Last year, Turkish police roughed-up environmental activists who tried to stop construction at sites in Gezi Park and Taksim Square, one of the few green spaces left in the heart of Istanbul. Fans of the city’s club Besiktas took part in demonstrations, and because one of the protest marches passed by the Prime Minister's office, it was considered an attempted coup d'état.
