Hawaii tsunami warning lifted

A tsunami warning for Hawaii has been downgraded to an advisory and evacuation orders were also lifted for coastal areas. The tsunami was triggered by a powerful earthquake off Canada's Pacific coast.

At least 100,000 people in Hawaii were ordered to move to higher ground late on Saturday after a tsunami warning, but the first waves were less forceful than had been expected and no damage was initially reported.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center announced early Sunday that the storm "could cause damage along the coastline of all islands in the state of Hawaii," adding that "urgent action should be taken to protect lives and property."

The West Coast and Alaska Tsunami Warning Center says an advisory is in effect for British Columbia, northern California and southern Oregon. A tsunami warning means an area is likely to be hit by a wave, while an advisory means an area could be hit.#video#

The 7.7-magnitude earthquake that shook the Queen Charlotte Islands occurred at 8:04 p.m. (0304 GMT Sunday) according to the US Geological Survey.

The Queen Charlotte Islands, which are also known by their official indigenous name of Haida Gwaii, comprise about 150 islands located north of Canada's Vancouver Island.

There were no immediate reports of casualties or damage on the islands.
