Toyota pickup recall

Japanese carmaker Toyota has recalled well over half a million pickup trucks in the United States. The company said it needed to fix a flaw in the suspension system that could result in fires.

Toyota announced Monday it was recalling 690,000 Tacoma pickup trucks in the US over a potential fire risk.

The company explained it had found a glitch in the trucks' rear suspension system. It said the latter contained springs that could fracture due to stress and corrosion. If the broken springs moved out of position and contacted the fuel tank repeatedly, they could puncture the tank, increasing the risk of a vehicle fire, Toyota said.

The carmaker told the AFP news agency it was also recalling about 100,000 Tacoma trucks outside the US.

Series of glitches

It was the third safety recall issued by the world's largest auto maker in the US alone this month, bringing the total of affected cars there to 840,000.

In mid-September, Toyota already took back vehicles due to bad welding on a fuel delivery pipe and another batch of pickup trucks to fix a structure that could interfere with side airbag deployment in case of a crash.

The carmaker said Monday it was not aware of any fires, injuries or fatalities caused by the most recent flaw discovered. It added owners would be notified by mail and dealers would fix the issue at no cost.
