    Six days, three cities, six concerts

    In mid-May 2012 the Deutsches Symphonie-Orchester Berlin (DSO) embarked on a tour of South America. Brazilian metropolis São Paulo was the first stop, followed by the Argentinian cities of Rosario and Buenos Aires.

    Here the DSO, led by Vladimir Ashkenazy - one of its former principal conductors - rehearses the Brazilian hit "Tico-tico no fubá" together with members of São Paulo Youth Orchestra (OJESP), who joined in for the concerts in Brazil.

    The Ibirapuera Auditorium is located in the park of the same name. Built in 2002, the theater was designed by Brazilian architect Oscar Niemeyer. Its distinguishing features include the trapezoid form and the extravagant red marquee, nicknamed "The Flame," which is also the building's logo.

    For the open-air concert on the following Sunday the perspective was reversed: when lifted, the back of the stage in the Ibirapuera Auditorium looks onto a lawn which can accommodate an audience of up to two thousand.

    Following was a concert in São Paulo's Teatro Municipal, one of South America's most traditional and illustrious venues. It was built in 1911 as an opera house.

    Later, the Teatro Municipal was opened to other artistic forms such as dance and symphonic music. Undergoing extensive renovations in 1954, 1991 and 2011, the venue is technically well equipped.

    The staircases in the foyer are predominantly in Art Nouveau style but also reflect the eclectic style en vogue in Brazil at the beginning of the 20th century, including Baroque and Renaissance elements. The theater is the home base of two orchestras, two choirs and a string quartet as well as dance and music schools.

    Rosario, in Santa Fé province, in the heart of Argentina's industrial corridor, is the country's third most populous city. Examples of well preserved neoclassical architecture lend the city a discrete charm. Rosarinos enjoy the sunny Saturday by the River Paraná – only a few feet away from a sign that says "Fishing forbidden".

    The Teatro El Círculo, another stop on the DSO tour, has delicate frescoes and seats with elegant gold decoration. This evening, another performance of Beethoven's Pastorale and Shostakovich's Tenth.

    "Porteño" glory

    Facing monumental Avenida 9 de Julio, Buenos Aires' Colón stands up to other world famous opera houses, such as Vienna, Dresden and Paris. So much prestige is of course reflected in the entrance fees, which climb to as much as US$ 500. Inaugurated 1908, it was reopened 2010 after three years of renovation and restoration. "Porteños" is what the locals of the Argentinean capital call themselves.

    In the Colón's grand acoustics, Ashkenazy dedicated the concert on May 18, 2012 with Mahler's Fifth Symphony to the memory of German singer Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau, who'd died that day. The symphony's first movement is a funeral march.

    Conductor and pianist Vladimir Ashkenazy mingles with musicians and public in São Paulo. At almost 75, the maestro is lively, agile and congenial. The Russian-born artist describes himself as a craftsman in the service of music.
