Tommy Haas beaten
May 3, 2014Hamburg-born 36-year-old Haas went down in two sets to 24-year-old Slovakian qualifier Martin Klizan. The ATP 111-ranked Klizan was playing his first ATP World Tour semi-final since April last year.
In cold temperatures and drizzling rain on Saturday afternoon, it took Klizan just over an hour to win 6-3, 6-2.
Ahead of the match, world ranked No. 16 Haas had said it was likely to be tough: "Very tricky player," Haas commented. "When he's on and he's feeling well, he's very dangerous, especially on clay. He was one of the best juniors many years ago. He must be feeling good, so I'm sure it's going to be a pretty tight match."
Haas was making his comeback from a right shoulder injury, which kept him sidelined since losing to Roger Federer in the fourth round in Indian Wells. He has been receiving treatment throughout the Munich tournament.
Defending champion Haas had reached the semifinals of the BMW Open after a, two-hour, three-set win (6-3, 3-6, 6-3) over Andreas Seppi on Friday. After that match Haas said: "[I didn't know] what to expect coming in here. Obviously, it's a great feeling to get back-to-back matches in the belt," he said. "Tough match today. It was very close, so happy to have pulled it out."
Haas was bidding to win his 16th ATP World Tour title. He took the Munich title for the first time last year, winning an all-German final against Philipp Kohlschreiber. He still hopes to play in the ATP Madrid tournament next week.
In Sunday's final, Klizan will play Italian top-seed Fabio Fognini who beat Jan-Lennard Struff from Warnstein 6-3, 6-1 in the other semifinal.
