Tiger Woods out of top 100

March 30, 2015

Tiger Woods has fallen out of the best 100 golfers in the world for the first time in his professional career. The 39-year-old American hasn't competed since early February after re-aggravating a back injury.

Tiger Woods has fallen out of the top 100 of the golf world rankings for the first time in his professional career. The former number one golfer has been in the top 100 players in the world since he turned pro in 1996.

The 14-time major winner, who first hit the number one spot in 1997, has fallen to 104th from 96th in the latest PGA tour rankings, issued after the weekend's tournaments.

The 39-year-old American spent 683 weeks as world number one, more than twice as long as any other player. He was last in that position in May 2014, before being overtaken by Australian Adam Scott.

An accumulation of injuries and swing problems have plagued Woods in recent years and are threatening to cut short the remainder of his career.

Woods shot an 82 in the Phoenix Open - his worst round as a professional - in January of this year. Shortly thereafter he withdrew from an event at Torrey Pines, with back and leg problems. He says that he hopes to return to action in next week's US Masters, the first major of the year, but has not yet confirmed his participation in Augusta.

Northern Ireland's Rory McIlroy remains world number one in the updated rankings.
