Tiger Woods posts worst ever card

January 31, 2015

The 14-times major winner has struggled in his return to competitive golf after a long layoff due to a back injury. He shot six bogeys, two double bogeys, a triple bogey and two birdies in a nightmare round on Friday.

Tiger Woods slumped to his worst round as a professional golfer when he carded an 11-over-par 82 in the second round of the Waste Management Phoenix Open on Friday.

His previous worst score was an 81 in the third round at Muirfield in the 2002 British Open, where he caught the brunt of whipping rain in heavy winds.

Coming after an opening round of 73, it meant Woods missed the cut in consecutive PGA Tour events for the first time in his career having also gone home on the second evening of the PGA Championship in August.

"It's golf, we all have days like this," Woods told reporters afterwards. "Unfortunately, mine was in a public forum, in a public setting."

This embarrassing performance came after intense work with new swing coach Chris Como and a tie for last place in an event hosted by Woods at his previous home course of Isleworth outside Orlando in December.

About the only thing the American didn't lose in Phoenix on Friday was his sense of humor.

"I'm just doing this so I don't get fined," Woods said with a smile as he faced the media, repeating Seattle Seahawks running back Marshawn Lynch's infamous repetition of the line at Super Bowl XLIX media day .
