As Barack Obama launches his second term in office, other countries, and especially European ones, have strong opinions about the way things are run in Washington.

Americans may give little credence to what the rest of the world thinks about their country and its policies, but Europeans, in particular, have very strong opinions about the way things are run in Washington.

DW looks at what other nations expect from the US after Barack Obama's re-election.

German reactions to Obama's second term

World leaders have been congratulating Obama on his re-election. Russia's president Vladimir Putin spoke of a "positive step", while in China, Hu Jintao hailed Obama for working towards a partnership based on "mutual respect". Here in Berlin, Angela Merkel said she looked forward to working side-by-side as friends and allies.
