Sumi Somaskanda

Sumi has reported for various radio, television and print outlets in the US, Germany and beyond.

After growing up in Upstate New York in the United States, she completed her bachelor's and master's degrees in journalism at Northwestern University in Chicago. She spent her time in Chicago reporting for local and regional television stations and helping produce an award-winning documentary on autism before heading to Washington D.C. to cover Capitol Hill.

Sumi then covered the state of New York from its capital, Albany, reporting for a 24-hour news station there, having the opportunity to interview state leaders and former President Bill Clinton.

She helped lead a new headline news program at Al Gore's Current TV network in San Francisco before joining Deutsche Welle television in early 2010. At DW, she works as a correspondent in the field, a presenter for Journal and a writer and producer. She also works with the Global Ideas team on their comprehensive multimedia program covering climate change.

In her free time, she reports on Germany and Europe as part of Associated Reporters Abroad (ARA), where her work has appeared in USA Today, Washington Times, Global Post and The Guardian. Sumi was part of the World Stories team right from the beginning, but you can still catch her on the Journal

Sumi speaks German, Spanish and Tamil as well as English.
