Submissions from across the world

More than 1,000 journalists from 109 countries entered this year's German Development Media Awards. The majority of submissions were from Africa.

Human rights and development are the focus of the German Development Media Awards and are open to journalists from six regions - Africa, Asia, the Middle East, Latin America, Eastern Europe-Central Asia - as well as Germany.

This year, 1081 journalists submitted their work for the Awards which included print and online stories and radio and television reports. A total of 119 African press photographers also entered photos for the People's Choice Award for human rights photography in Africa.

The Awards attracted submissions from around the world, including the Democratic Republic of Congo, Somalia, Bhutan, Afghanistan, Turkmenistan, Colombia and Belarus. The majority of submissions were from Africa (30%), followed by the Middle East (20%) and Asia (17%). Within Africa, journalists from 33 sub-Saharan countries entered the Awards. The highest number of submissions came from Kenya (91). This was followed by Germany (79), Egypt, India, Nigeria and the Palestinian Territories.

In most regions print dominated the media formats. However in Eastern Europe-Central Asia and Latin America, online stories tended to feature more prominently. The majority of radio pieces were from Africa.

Finalists were selected by a committee of Deutsche Welle journalists, DW editorial department heads and DW Akademie trainers specialising in each region. In July, an independent jury will decide the six winners. The jury members include German newscaster Ingo Zamperoni, Kenyan journalist and activist Auma Obama, and human rights expert Michael Windfuhr. The award ceremony will be held in Berlin on August 14 at the studios of the German public broadcaster, ARD. The awards will be jointly presented by the Minister of the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development, Dirk Niebel, and DW Director-General, Erik Bettermann.

This is the first time that the long-standing German Development Media Awards have been opened to international journalists; it is also the first time they are being held in cooperation with Deutsche Welle.
