Indigenous peoples around the world play an important role in conservation. Not only do they have a vast store of traditional knowledge. They also tend to live in areas where there is still a high degree of biological diversity.

When these regions come under threat from non-sustainable forms of development, indigenous peoples also find themselves fighting for survival.

The Worldwide Fund for Nature (WWF) supports projects around the world aimed at protecting the biodiversity of endangered regions – and at the same time, the cultures of indigenous peoples who live there.

DW-RADIO has sent reporters to visit these projects and see just how indigenous peoples help preserve the ecology of the planet.
