“A politically incorrect blog from Lebanon” – that’s how 23-year-old Joey Ayoub from Beirut describes www.hummusforthought.com, a website that he co-founded with a friend. It “explores sociocultural issues with a focus on Lebanon and the Middle East,” he says.

Ayoub works as a blogger, photographer and aspiring young author. In 2014 he was among a group of scholars invited by the German Foreign Office to participate in the Global Media Forum in Bonn. “The more I learn,” he says, “the more I realize that there are unifying characteristics that all human beings share and, in studying fields such as history, film studies, anthropology and political philosophy, I wish to understand the human condition in all its manifestations.”

He’s particularly interested in people and his environment “in the broadest possible sense,” says Ayoub. His areas of focus range from human rights and matters of identity through to environmental and urban planning. This far-reaching context prompted him to found a blog that aims “to understand Lebanon and its complexities while advocating for change.” Like most of the other Global Media Forum scholars, he is already quite well-known in his home country and is regarded by many of his activist peers as a role model for the young generation.

Ayoub’s writing is featured on many blogs and websites. He is also co-founder of another website called Humans of Lebanon, a project based on the Humans of New York photo campaign by Brandon Stanton. This outlet features Ayoub’s photographic work, which he says also pursues the primary goal of “celebrating Lebanon’s diversity.”
