Species Loss on Mauritius - What's left of paradise

Every year, nearly a million tourists come to the island nation. Residents and visitors have taken a heavy toll on the ecosystem. In no other country on earth have more species become extinct than in Mauritius.

Scientists, NGOs and private initiatives are trying to save what's left, and re-establish the country's original biodiversity. Some of the funding, however, comes from a controversial business method. Laboratory monkeys bred locally are sold to bring in money for nature protection.
