July 7, 2014

The US Transportation Security Administration has said it will not allow powerless cell phones or electronic devices on US-bound flights. Officials are concerned the devices could be used as a bomb.

US-bound travelers from Europe and the Middle East may be asked by security agents to turn on their electronic devices at checkpoints. If they do not have power, the devices will not be allowed on planes, the US Transportation Security Administration (TSA) said on Sunday.

"TSA will continue to adjust security measures to ensure that travelers are guaranteed the highest levels of aviation security conducted as conveniently as possible," a statement from the agency said. The TSA also called for closer checks on travelers' shoes.

The new measure is part of the TSA's effort announced last week to strengthen security amid concerns that al Qaeda-linked militants are developing new explosives that could be brought onto planes undetected.

The TSA, which falls under the Department of Homeland Security, said Wednesday the measures would be implemented at "certain overseas airports with direct flights into the United States."

Western intelligence services are concerned European jihadists returning from fighting in Syria and Iraq threaten the US as most Europeans do not need a visa to travel to the United States.
