"Michael is making progress … He shows moments of consciousness and awakening," Schumacher's manager Sabine Kehm said in a statement Friday.

"We are by his side during his long and difficult fight, together with the team from the hospital in Grenoble, and we keep remaining confident," she added.

On behalf of Schumacher's family, Kehm thanked his supporters "for the unbroken sympathy." She said the family again asks for understanding "that we do not want to go into detail, in order to protect Michael's privacy and that of his family and to leave the team of doctors in peace."

The 45-year-old Schumacher has been in an induced coma at the hospital in Grenoble since hitting his head on a rock during a skiing accident on December 29 at the French resort of Meribel. Doctors operated to remove some of the blood clots from his brain, but some were also left because they were too deeply embedded.

In late January, doctors began the process of slowly waking him up with the goal of returning him to consciousness.
