Satellite Surveillance for Disaster Aid

August 12, 2013

When a natural disaster strikes anywhere in the world, be it a flood, an earthquake or a tsunami, scientists at the Center for Satellite-Based Crisis Information (ZKI) spring into action. Stella Hubert is one of the team leaders who help to coordinate the rescue work.

The Center provides accurate satellite maps for emergency workers on the ground and carries out risk analyses of the situation. How great is the danger? Who is most at risk? Tomorrow Today takes a look at the ZKI's activities. The Center for Satellite-Based Crisis Information (ZKI) is a service of the German Remote Sensing Data Center (DFD), a part of the German Aerospace Center (DLR). It lends support around the clock in cases of natural or environmental disasters, providing maps and risk analyses based on satellite data. The information from the ZKI can be essential for humanitarian aid workers and civil security officials worldwide.
