Sandra Maria Gronewald

May 23, 2012

Travel and foreign languages are Sandra Maria Gronewald's two principal hobbies. The multilingual journalist is ideally suited to the job of presenting DW's travel magazine in three languages:

“Hin & weg” in German, “Discover Germany” in English, and “Destino Alemania” in Spanish.

Trained as an interpreter in Florence, Sandra Maria Gronewald studied Italian and Spanish as well as Art History. She also received a Master's in Journalism and a PhD in Italian Linguistics. But Sandra always made time to travel, and her studies took her to Germany, Italy and the US, and she lived in Mexico for a time. Along the way, she gathered experience in radio, newswires, and television. At German public broadcaster ZDF, she worked on “Drehscheibe Deutschland” and in ZDF regional studios, as well as on “Leute heute” in Munich. There she was responsible for covering international events like the Academy Awards ceremony in LA or the Venice Film Festival. Sandra has been presenting the English version of DW's European lifestyle program “Euromaxx” since 2008. In 2012, she began presenting the daily ZDF program "Hallo Deutschland" in Mainz.

Traveling means more to Sandra than just exploring foreign countries -- she also loves to discover her own country. She originally hails from Mainz and says she appreciates the area's friendly people and many wine festivals. Today she lives in Munich, where she enjoys traditional Bavarian cuisine and being so close to the Alps -- she can almost walk out the door and go skiing. But she also has a soft spot for Berlin as well -- the city that never sleeps (and its notorious attitude) will always have a place in her heart. The cosmopolitan journalist is thrilled to be presenting her home to the world, in three languages.
