When youngsters go online, parents often find themselves struggling to protect their children from bullying, pornography, and scenes of violence. Frequently it is the youngest children who face the greatest risk of seeing something they are too young to handle. Plus parents know little about how and where their kids surf.

There are programs to help families tailor internet access to meet their needs. Today, the internet is to young people what television and video games were to their parents. Whether they surf for fun, information or communication, kids often do it without their parents' knowledge. Oldsters are barely able to monitor what their kids find on the net. SHIFT looks at programs available to reduce these risks.
