Nico Rosberg clinched his first win of the Formula One season on Sunday, crossing the line over 14 seconds ahead of teammate Lewis Hamilton in the Spanish Grand Prix in Barcelona.

After clinching pole ahead of teammate Hamilton on Saturday, Rosberg was hell-bent on securing his first win of the Formula One season and was dominant throughout the race.

"It was a perfect weekend," Rosberg said on the podium. "Perfect to be on pole and then to win the race like this."

Championship leader Hamilton got off to a horrid start. Going into the first corner, the British driver was overtaken by Sebastian Vettel of Ferrari. The German extended his lead over Hamilton throughout the race, until Hamilton posted an excellent pit-stop on lap 52, emerging ahead of Vettel in second.

Rosberg stayed well clear of the two-man attack behind him and took the checkered flag with ease. The win puts Rosberg 20 points behind teammate Hamilton at the top of the Driver's Championship standings.

A scary return to Barcelona for Alonso

On his return to the circuit, where he crashed in practice, Fernando Alonso struggled and went out of the race just before the halfway mark. On lap 28, the Spaniard overshot his mark in the pit box due to brake problems. The McLaren driver was forced to retire from the race.

"It was scary," Alonso told reporters after the race. "Our team needs to make improvements so it doesn't happen again."

It was the first time Alonso had returned to the Circuit de Barcelona-Cataunya since his crash during testing in February before the start of the season.

The next Formula One race is the famous Monaco Grand Prix on May 24.
