Rooney chases status
October 12, 2014Wayne Rooney's second-half free-kick moved him within six goals of Sir Bobby Charlton in England's all-time scoring charts. The Manchester United ace has netted 43 times for England and is within one of another legend in Jimmy Greaves.
The Three Lions stuttered towards a 1-0 win away to Estonia with the 28-year-old's free-kick in the 73rd minute settling the scores in Tallin. The home side played the bulk of the second period with ten men after Augsburg's Ragnar Klavan was dismissed for a second bookable offense.
Rooney should have sealed another one in injury time, but England bagged the points, maintaining a 100 percent record in qualification without conceding a single goal.
In the early selection of matches, Russia dropped two points at home to Moldova with the game ending one apiece. In the 72nd minute, Victor Golovatenco brough down Aleksei Ionov and Artem Dzyuba converted from the penalty spot, only for Alexandru Epureanu to head in, less than a minute later.
Elsewhere, Ukraine won by a single goal at home to Macedonia and Austria beat Montenegro by the same scoreline.
Spain recovered from a 2-1 defeat at Slovakia at the weekend by winning comfortably 4-0 at minnows Luxembourg. Bayern Munich's Juan Bernat scored the last of the goals.
Head coach Vicente Del Bosque introduced several new faces to the youngest selection of his tenure, which included David de Gea of Manchester United and Pablo Alcacer of Valencia who scored the second on the night. Andres Iniesta captained the team for the first time in his career.
Meanwhile, former Cologne striker Milivoje Novakovič scored twice to help Slovenia to a win in Lithuania. Slovakia snatched a 3-1 win in Belarus and Sweden beat Liechtenstein 2-0 at home.
