Rice Research - new techniques for better harvests

Rice is a staple food in Asia so rice producers have a big responsibility when it comes to ensuring the population is nourished. High-yield strains of rice have boosted harvests in the past, but they require lots of water and pesticides.

Scientists from various countries at the International Rice Research Institute in Philippines are investigating traditional rice-growing techniques in that country and Vietnam. They hope to help farmers in other parts of Asia work more effectively and sustainably. They're also researching the chemical composition of various types of soil - another important factor in successful rice-growing.
