Residents and rebels caught in Donetsk attack
Residents and pro-Russian separatists fled into shelters as shelling hit Donetsk over the weekend. The attack killed at least four people in a suburb of the eastern Ukrainian city.
Under Lenin's eyes
Residential buildings were hit by a rocket attack on Sunday (13.7.2014) in Marinka, a south-western suburb of Donetsk situated 15 kilometers (nine miles) from the center of the eastern Ukrainian city.
Unknown attackers
No official information was released, but foreign journalists based in Donetsk said the attack appeared to have come from the West, territory controlled by Ukrainian government forces. Marinka is currently controlled by separatists from the Donetsk People's Republic (DPR).
Reduced to rubble
At least four people died in the shelling. That included a man in his 50s who was standing by a window in this building when the attack took place.
Beyond repair
Smoke was still spewing from the rocket attack hours later. A mangled garage with a burned-out vehicle was left. The source of the rocket attack remained unclear a day later. Unofficially Ukrainian military said the army did not have such weapons in the area.
Safety down below
Two pensioners hastily made their way into a residential cellar as shelling of the suburb carried on Sunday afternoon. With apparently no power, light from a candle guided the men down the stairs.
Break from bombs
Marinka residents were not the only ones caught in the fire. Separatists took shelter in a Soviet-built bunker. It gave them an opportunity to rest and eat.
Back in the light
A few hours later the all-clear was given and some of the rebels went outside for fresh air ...
Fuelled by nicotine
… and a much-needed cigarette break. They talked about their families, the current situation and what the future holds.
Sharing the goods
A separatist from a nearby unit came to visit the bunker. She was given fruit and milk before she left - provisions donated by locals to pass on.
