Whether it's wind power in China, biogas in Nepal or geothermal energy in Kenya - renewable energy is helping a growing number of people in rural regions create their own power and gain the opportunity to escape poverty.

The days are over in which people spent hours searching deforested areas for material to burn. Some communities have found an alternative and are harvesting their energy themselves.

It's energy that's crucial. Finally, there's power for light and water pumps, for machinery in agricultural and small businesses. It's energy that can be essential for survival. Hospitals can now cool their medicines around the clock.

Sun and wind, geothermal energy or biogas can be used almost everywhere and at all times, from everyone - theoretically. But how can the poorest of the poor get affordable loans and suitable machinery in order to profit from renewable energy?
