Rees, Gavin

Journalist and filmmaker, director of Dart Centre Europe

Gavin Rees, a journalist and filmmaker, is the director of Dart Centre Europe, an organization dedicated to promoting ethical and innovative approaches to the coverage of trauma and violence. Rees’s interest in how traumatic interviews are conducted began as a result of interviewing survivors of the nuclear attack on Hiroshima for a BBC documentary drama, a film which won an International Emmy in 2006. Prior to that, Rees worked on a wide range of broadcast media, producing business and political news for Financial Times Television and CNBC and international news for Japanese networks, as well as working on documentary and drama films for UK terrestrial channels and independent film companies.

Rees is on the board of the European Society for Traumatic Stress Studies and is a visiting fellow at the Centre for Public Communication in the Media School at Bournemouth University, with whom he led a 15-month research project into the craft of interviewing.
