Ramone died on Friday in his New York home following treatment for cancer, according to the entertainment magazine Vanity.

The band took to its Twitter feed on Saturday to announce Tommy Ramone's death.

The musician, born Erdelyi Tamas in Budapest, Hungary, co-founded the Ramones in 1974 in New York with singer Joey Ramone, bassist DeeDee Ramone and guitarist Johnny Ramone. The band members were not related, but all took the common surname Ramone.

While they never scored a Top 40 hit, their songs “I wanna be sedated” and “Blitzkrieg Bop” saw them inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2002.

The Ramones disbanded in 1996 following a tour for their final studio album, “Adios Amigos.”

Band member Johnny Ramone died in 2004 of prostate cancer, Joey Ramone passed away in 2001 of lymphatic cancer. DeeDee Ramone died of a drug overdose in 2002.
