The Polish cyclist Rafal Majka won the 17th stage of the 2014 Tour de France on Wednesday, his second victory after winning on the 14th in the Alps.

The victory means Majka has extended his lead over the Italian Vincenzo Nibali and Spain's Joaquim Rodriguez in the King of the Mountains standings. He now has 149 points, with Nibali on 118 and Rodriguez on 112, with 80 points still up for grabs.

Nibali's Sicilian compatriot Giovanni Visconti came in second on Wednesday, while Nibali took third place to extend his overall race lead. He now tops Spain's Alejandro Valverde by 5 minutes, 26 seconds.

France's Jean-Christophe Peraud was fourth in the stage, and also took fourth place overall, just 8 seconds behind fellow Frenchman Thibaut Pinot

The 17th stage was a grueling 124.5-km (77.36-mile) haul through the Pyrenees from Saint-Gaudens to Saint- Lary-Soulan, taking the competitors over four taxing climbs.
