Germany celebrates its World Cup victory, the entire country is a sea of waving flags. The fans celebrated a team - not only a collection of stars, but a disciplined, tactically strong unit of players and coaches. What is behind the success of the German team and what does it mean for Germany as a force in the world?

Germany is an export power, a major economy led by a mighty chancellor, Angela Merkel. The country's president Joachim Gauck recently called on Germany to play a bigger role in European security policy. Is his country ready and willing to do so? What would more political responsibility look like - and what do other countries think of Germany expanding its role?

Pascale Hugues - Born in Straßburg, Hugues began her career in journalism at the BBC world service in London before moving on to become the English correspondent at the French daily newspaper, "Libération". Her job with the paper took her to Germany in 1989. Since 1995, she has worked as a correspondent for French news magazine "Le Point". She became known as an author after her book, "Le Bonheur Allemand" or "German Happiness" was published.

Melissa Eddy - is the Berlin Correspondent for the International New York Times. Prior to that, she had been covering Germany since 2000, first as a General Correspondent for The Associated Press in Frankfurt, then as a Berlin Correspondent for AP. During that time she tracked the rise of Angela Merkel to the chancellery, followed the euphoria in the streets during the 2006 World Cup and the crisis in the euro zone since its earliest days.
