Many of the autocratic leaders that rule in Africa, Latin America and Arab countries often purchase properties abroad. Many have long favoured France's Côte d'Azur; entire clans purchased top quality real estate here - using money plundered from their nation's coffers. But now friendly relations with the West have cooled, and some of the luxury villas are standing empty.

In Hungary, more than a million people are forced to drink water that exceeds the World Health Organization limits on acceptable arsenic by more than thirty times. Hundreds of thousands now rely on drinking water brought in by tanker trucks. Although the EU is pressuring state and local authorities for a solution, thus far little has been done to remedy the situation.
