Bombs near el-Sissi's HQ

June 30, 2014

Two bombs have detonated near Cairo's presidential palace, killing two police officers, including one during a bid to defuse a device. The blasts occurred at the locations where major protests occurred a year ago.

Egypt's interior ministry said a colonel was killed and several other policemen were injured during while they tried to defuse the first device. Several days ago an Islamist militant group said it had planted bombs near the east Cairo palace.

In Monday's second incident, a police lieutenant colonel was also killed. A ambulance medic's hand was ripped off by that blast.

Last Friday, the militant Anjad Misr group said it had "penetrated" what it called the "lair" of Egypt's new president and ex-army chief Abdel-Fattah el-Sissi, who had previously sworn to crack down on militants.

It was not clear where el-Sissi was in the Ittihadiya palace (pictured) at the time.

Last Wednesday, five small bombs went off in Cairo metro stations, wounding five people.

Islamists blame el-Sissi for a major crackdown that followed the army-led ouster in July last year of former president Mohammed Morsi and removal from office of his Muslim Brotherhood movement.

Thousands of Islamists have been arrested, with about 200 sentenced to death at rapid trials. The Brotherhood denies being behind militant attacks.
