Passion for Brazil - Its People, Dreams and Traditions

Few countries on Earth have been more shaped by immigration than Brazil. Over the centuries, millions of people came to the country to try their luck. Most of them were from Europe, but millions of slaves were also shipped over from Africa in the most inhuman conditions. They all mixed with Brazil’s indigenous tribes who had been there for thousands of years. The result is a society unique in the world - a multi-ethnic society of 200 million people. And in spite of the diversity of their roots, most of them feel Brazilian and are proud of it. Football, samba, carnival, the beach - all may be conventional clichés, but they have helped forge a shared Brazilian identity. Thisfusion of cultures seems to work better than elsewhere, although black Brazilians often complain of discrimination.

The film portraysethnic German Brazilians in the south and Japanese-born Brazilians in Sao Paulo, as well as the descendants of Portuguese immigrants in Rio de Janeiro, African slaves in Salvador and indigenous tribes in the Amazon rainforest. It is a journey through beautiful countryside and along wild beaches to fascinating cities.
