OPEC is an intergovernmental organization, set up to coordinate the policies of oil-producing countries.
OPEC was founded up in 1960, has grown to include Iraq, Kuwait, Iran, Saudi Arabia, Venezuela, Libya, United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Indonesia, Algeria, Nigeria, Ecuador, Angola, and Gabon. OPEC has its headquarters are in Vienna, Austria.
The UN Security Council has authorized member states to board ships suspected of carrying oil from Libyan rebel-held ports. The decision follows the US seizure of a tanker with oil from a rebel zone in eastern Libya.
