New Plans for the Loreley

January 15, 2015

Any tourist who’s visited the Upper Middle Rhine Valley knows the Loreley. Now plans are in the works to redesign the Plateau on top of the famous rock overlooking the Rhine. A museum in Koblenz is exhibiting the plans.

The popular Loreley viewing platform is in need of a facelift. To freshen up the 1970s-style tourist attraction, a design competition was launched in the summer of 2014.

Four designs were chosen as finalists and they are on display in the exhibition in Koblenz. The first-placed entry, submitted by an Erfurt architecture office, includes plans to create a walkway leading visitors straight to the Loreley and through the rocks to the lookout point over the Rhine.

The final design has not yet been chosen, but one thing is certain: the plans must not jeopardize the Upper Middle Rhine Valley’s UNESCO World Heritage status. This year the planners will focus on raising money for the project.

The Loreley, a 132 meter high slate cliff on the eastern bank of the Rhine River near the town of Sankt Goarshausen is one of Germany’s most popular tourist destinations.
