New York City police said they found the dead woman after being called to her apartment shortly after 10 am local time (1400 UTC).

"Upon arrival, officers discovered a 49-year-old female unconscious and unresponsive," a police spokeswoman said.

"She was pronounced dead on arrival. The investigation is ongoing. The medical examiners will determine the cause of death."

Scott, a former fashion model-turned designer and celebrity stylist, had been dating Sir Mick Jagger since 2001.

A spokesman for the Rolling Stones frontman said: "He is completely shocked and devastated by the news."

According to his official Twitter account, Jagger, 70, is currently touring in Perth, Australia.

While the cause of her death is unconfirmed, US media reports say she was found hanging with a scarf around her neck by her assistant.

A law enforcement official, who wished to remain anonymous until the designer's next of kin were notified, said no suicide note was found but there is currently no sign of foul play.
