Each month, the Italian navy rescues close to 1,000 refugees from the waters of the Mediterranean. Operation Mare Nostrum was launched after the tragedy off Lampedusa in October 2013, with the loss of over 60 lives. Nearly 100,000 refugees have been rescued since then.
