Augsburg out of cup, FCB cruise

Mark HallamAugust 17, 2014

First Mainz, then Stuttgart, now FC Augsburg have fallen at the German Cup's first hurdle, in Magdeburg. RB Leipzig got the better of top-flight SC Paderborn after extra time, too; Bayern Munich won 4-1 in Münster.

Markus Weinzierl's Augsburg could not continue the 2013/14 fairytale on Sunday in Magdeburg, losing 1-0 to 1. FC Magdeburg in the German Cup.

Some sloppy defending from a set piece, with Jan-Ingwer Callsen-Bracker left all alone to deal with an inswinging cross, set the surprise goal in motion. After Callsen-Bracker failed to head clear, Christian Beck (at the front of the conga line pictured above) had time and space to fire home with his left foot on 57 minutes. Augsburg follow in the footsteps of Mainz and Stuttgart, the Bundesliga's other first round casualties.

In the other early-evening match, newly-promoted Bundesliga outfit SC Paderborn took the lead against "minnows" RB Leipzig, only to concede a cruelly deflected direct free kick. The Red Bull-backed second division side impressed as they held the score at 1-1 over 90 minutes, seeking to show their top-flight credentials and claim a fourth Bundesliga scalp of the weekend.

Clemens Fandrich broke the deadlock in extra time for Leipzig, leaving Bundesliga relegation candidates Paderborn free to concentrate on dodging the drop.

Schipplock rampant, Bayern comfy

Hoffenheim had no such problems, banging home nine goals in the DFB Pokal first round for the second year in a row. Sven Schipplock netted five times, including four before the break, as Hoffenheim made mincemeat of USC Paloma Hamburg on Sunday. Fellow strikers Adam Szalai and Anthony Modeste, Schipplock's replacement late on, were among the other scorers in the 9-0 riot.

Bayern Munich also progressed on Sunday, 4-1 against third-tier Preussen Münster. Despite the search for a new central defender, it was long-term injury victim Holger Badstuber filling the gap at the back on Sunday, starting his first game since December 2012 following knee problems. World Cup winners Mario Götze, heading home a Robert Lewandowski cross, and Thomas Müller helped Bayern to an early 2-0 lead.

Early in the second period, David Alaba put Bayern three goals to the good with a dipping shot from long range, before Claudio Pizarro added a fourth. Münster scored a consolation goal from the spot, and Lewandowski - seeking his first competitive Bayern goal - missed a penalty at the other end with the last kick of the game.

Bremen dodge fourth consecutive disaster

FV Illertissen, meanwhile, held Werder Bremen level at 1-1 over 90 minutes, forcing extra time against their Bundesliga opponents. Bremen had fallen in the very first round for the past three seasons in a row, and fans surely feared another nightmare start to the season on Sunday. Yet Assani Lukimya and German youngster Davie Selke appeared to settle the northern nerves early in extra time, stretching Werder's lead to 3-1. Marc Hämmerle immediately pulled the hosts back into contention but the score stayed 3-2 Bremen, breaking the losing Cup run for Robin Dutt's side.

VfR Aalen and BSV SW Rehden also competed for an additional half hour, having finished 90 minutes level at 1-1. Aalen ultimately triumphed on penalties after Rehden's brave showing, goalie Daniel Bernhardt twice saved from the spot.

Freiburg through, Fortuna fall

SC Freiburg lived up to the favorites' tag, beating Eintracht Trier 2-0 on Karim Guede and Julian Schuster goals. Karlsruhe toppled 1. FC Neubrandenburg 3-1, while third-division Arminia Bielefeld punched above their weight to oust SV Sandhausen 4-1.

Fortuna Düsseldorf became the big scalps of Sunday afternoon, losing 3-2 after extra time to the Würzburger Kickers. Fortuna finished with just nine men, as captain Adam Bodzek secured his second yellow in the closing seconds of the match. Dutchman Charlison Benschop was sent packing in the second half for insulting and then pushing an opponent.

Wolfsburg traveled to Darmstadt for the last game of the day, with new signing Aaron Hunt - formerly of Werder Bremen - in the starting lineup. The Wolves had a hard time of it, unable to score all night, but ultimately held their nerve to prevail on penalties. Max Grün, in goal for flu-ridden captain Diego Benaglio, stopped two of the Darmstadt penalties.
