Healing wounds

In almost three years, at least 140,000 people have been killed and nearly half a million wounded in fighting in Syria. In Turkey, a group of Syrians are working together to help those injured in the conflict.

The National Syrian Project for Prosthetic Limbs, is located in the Syrian-Turkish border town of Reyhanli, in Turkey. It provides artificial limbs for injured Syrians who manage to get across the border.

Started in April 2013 by Syrian doctors, the prosthetics center is funded by non-profit aid organizations. Most of the technicians at the center have learned on the job and they work with locally-sourced materials, making the prosthetic limbs more affordable.

The center doesn’t just help civilians. It also occasionally provides new limbs to injured rebel fighters engaged in ongoing battles with the regime of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.
