Sperm smuggling

Irris Makler, Nablus / alOctober 12, 2013

As Israel resumes airstrikes in Gaza in response to rocket attacks, Palestinian prisoners in Israel are taking advantage of a unique opportunity to have another child. Defying the authorities, they are transporting their sperm secretly out of jail to their wives.

It is estimated that some 5,000 Palestinians are currently in custody in Israeli jails. Most of them stand accused of having been part of terrorist attacks against Israel. Some have also been jailed for being in Israel illegally.

Amnesty International says that some of the prisoners, who come from both the West Bank and the Gaza Strip, are being held without trial and do not have proper access to legal representation. In addition, some are not granted visits by family members.

Israel has said it will release 26 Palestinian prisoners on Tuesday (29.10.2013), as part of a US-brokered agreement. Tuesday's group is the second of four planned releases in coming months. Shortly after the names of the prisoners were published, rockets were fired by Palestinian militants over the border. Israel bombed two targets in northern Gaza in response.
