Football in Argentina: Fair play for women

Eilis O'Neill, Buenos Aires / lwOctober 12, 2013

While Argentina is proud of its footballing history, with their men’s team among the best in the world, female soccer players still live in the shadow of their male counterparts. For two decades now, Marcela Lesich has been on the frontlines of the fight for gender equality in Argentine football.

Professional football players in Argentina can expect to earn among the top salaries in the sport worldwide. Yet members of the Women’s National Football Team do not get paid at all.

Many of these female players, driven by a passion for the sport, work full time jobs alongside their training and match commitments, in order to support themselves and their families.

Maria Lesich, who played for the national team, has found a way to earn from her sporting talents: she now works as a coach for one of Argentina’s most famous football clubs, Boca Juniors. At the same time, she is campaigning to get more money into women’s football, and encouraging more and more girls onto the pitch.
