Controversial Laos dams

The Mekong River, which flows through six countries on its way from the Tibetan plateau to the South China Sea, is under pressure from rapid development - and now, dams are creating an additional threat. Landlocked and cash-poor, Laos is building at least two dams in a bid to turn itself into the "battery of Southeast Asia." But environmentalists and neighboring countries are calling foul.
