In 1980, Horst Hrubesch scored two goals that helped Germany win the European Championship. Three years later, with his club Hamburg, he and teammates Felix Magath, Manfred Kaltz and Thomas von Heesen won the European Cup. But he was never a prima donna. On the pitch he favored the practical over the spectacular, and that made the striker all the more lethal, particularly in the air.

Hrubesch grew up in a working class background and was never afraid of breaking a sweat. Nowadays, he has his own horse farm, and he's currently the coach of Germany's national Under 19 squad. His "boys," as he calls them all aspire to follow in his own footsteps. We talk to him about his own career, the next generation of top German footballers and the future prospects for the national team.
